Oak Park  is a friendly village that lies at the top of the shoreline of ancient, glacial “Lake Chicago”. Well known for its unique mixture of home styles, parks, schools and neighborhoods; homes date back to the 1870’s and include a tremendous variety of architecture and range in price from the mid $200,000’s to $2,000,000. Parks are beautifully designed, schools are excellent, the vibe is great!

This GrtHomes.com site is a great way to explore this community. We are constantly adding more pages to help you get to know Oak Park and River Forest’s neighborhoods, businesses and people too. There is so much to do. The area has an active arts community. Locals enjoy recreational opportunities that are reminesent of the historic community, including some of the most beautiful public parks in the Chicago area, outdoor pools, an Olympic style ice-skating/roller rink and the Oak Park Conservatory. Downtown Oak Park also offers a number of wonderful boutiques, national retailers, fantastic restaurants and galleries.

The majority of Oak Parks homes were built between 1892 and 1950. The Great Chicago Fire was a main factor in the growth of the village, with many well to do business owners choosing to build their estates here for the convenience of the rail roads easy access to the city. Yet Oak Park has always been home to the traditional working family too. It truly has always been a village for everybody. By 1936 the village of 64,000 people was often referred to as the largest village in the world. Today Oak Park and River Forest have an international reputation as a beautifully multicultural place to live, work and visit.

Oak Park and River Forest are sister villages and they have a nearly unlimited range of home styles including original designs from budding architects that would come to influence the world over.  The builders and architects from the later 1860’s and 70’s immigrated to Oak Park and, influenced by the Paris world’s fair and the Columbian exposition of Chicago,  went on to build homes that were at the limits of imagination.

Walking through the neighborhoods you see turn-of-the-century homes with all their original shapes and styles. You will get a sense of the contrasting architectural styles which developed over the decades. Time moved slowly back then and it took two years to build a home and 50 years to build a neighborhood. From the 1860s Gothic’s to the 1880s Victorians to the turn-of-the-century prairie style.

Like my father, I believe living in and raising a family here in Oak Park and River Forest has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Oak Park/River Forest is all about the beautiful homes, great nightlife, weekend activities, parks, schools, and its famously short commute time to downtown Chicago. I love showing people the neighborhoods and homes and sharing my experiences growing up and raising my family in Oak Park and River Forest. The village has always been changing and it is more exciting now than ever!…
